Other Notes
The King of Dreams is, by profession, a Freudian analyst. He believes, as Freudians do, that dreams are the key to understanding minds and mental illness. But he also thinks-- beyond this-- that by controlling these dreams, he can cure such illness, so he learns how to do so.
Say a patient is upset because she never got to tell her father she loved him before he died. As a therapist, he learns this. Then, that night while she sleeps, he enters her room (he can blend in with the darkness) and becomes her father (he can change shape since his skin is impervious). She wakes, sees him and tells him. He puts her back to sleep and leaves. She wakes cured, unsure if she was dreaming or not since "it was so real."
But, in becoming whatever it is that patients need, he eventually loses his entire sense of self. And by always being what others expect, he never knows if they like him for himself, or for his personas, which he bases after all on their own dreams.
And he starts doing this to people who are not his patients, but who he simply feels could use his... services. Mostly women. Ironically, the women all eventually feel he is "too perfect" and has no personality of his own (more true than they know) and dump him. Even more ironically, this experience cures them of their hang-up of finding the "perfect" guy and they become more open in their choices, and find lasting relationships.
