Other Notes
Mr. Spaceman is what our narrator calls the leader, or lead scout, of the "strangers" who visit him often, sometimes several nights in one week. This being seems mostly curious and somewhat adaptable. While his vocal apparatus does not seem to allow him to communicate verbally, for example, his crew have deciphered the English language well enough to write whole sentences. They are still unclear as to the use of many Earth substances, and most likely wrote their farewell message to him on his wall with toothpaste.
Unlike aliens who wish to subjugate or eradicate humans, these aliens seek to simply learn about and from us.
Luckily (or maybe purposely), they chose to interact with a human with several characteristics-- he is an average human in most ways and so can provide a good baseline for further comparison and study (other aliens only want to interact with our "leader"), and he is easygoing to a fault, accepting of their messmaking and unlikely to inform the authorities (other humans would call the police, the army, or a university). Mostly, this dude just wants to go for a ride in their far-out space-car, man. And considering how much he's willing to tolerate of their explorations in his house and yard, it seems impolite for them not to at least let him see the inside of their ship, now that I think about it.
We seldom see an alien/human contact scenario that is this casual, and it's kind of nice.
