Girl on Fire is a sentient flame. She is the child of Mother Earth, born from its molten core and birthed through an Icelandic volcano. When she emerges, she reaches to the sky... and her gigantic form seems distinctly feminine to humans.
When she feels that a major fire has happened, she flies to the scene. By instantly burning off all the combustible material present (including oxygen), she stops the fire by limiting its scope. So rather than making it worse, she literally fights fire with (a stronger) fire-- herself. Yes, the building or patch of forest is completely burned away... but only that place is affected (it was on fire already) and the fire does not spread across a town or forest. Once people learn her method works, she is lauded and celebrated. She seems so very obviously dangerous-- and she may cause some collateral damage-- but she learns to wait until all humans and animals are evacuated before she touches down. She can't do anything for floods or tidal waves, which would drown her; if she touched down, the rising steam would be very destructive. As far as tornadoes, or hurricanes, she can help burn off some clouds preventively, but once these storms start, they would drown her or snuff her out. She is some use in mitigating the effects of blizzards, like clearing roads, once the storms have stopped. She can somewhat contain volcanic eruptions, and certainly guide the lava away from inhabited areas. In earthquakes, she can help stem the spread of gasoline-leak or natural gas line-leak fires until someone cuts off the supply line for the fuel. And she can help stop oil-rig fires the same way. For all the good she does, no on can really relate to or communicate with her, so she is lonely. |
