Other Notes
First, "mind over matter" usually implies some form of telekinesis or telepathy-- controlling objects or people with one's mind. That's not what's happening here; he's not using some mental power, just a spell he picked up. Still, he considered that using his mind to control things; but that same logic would consider lifting a car with a crane "mind over matter" since you use your mind to run the crane,
In any case, Mind, as he calls himself, is what today we would call an "incel," someone who considers himself "involuntarily celibate." He loves this one "fine" woman, she doesn't love him back. Rather than move on to any one of the other women in the world-- and they comprise half its population-- he has fixated on one he can't get.
He has told himself he loves her, but really, it's the challenge he craves. She might as well be a prize at a carnival. And he's willing to cheat to "win" her. If the spell involves a potion, it might be a metaphor for a date-rape drug.
